While Queen Herodias wanted John the Baptist killed for speaking out against King Herod marrying her, being his brother's wife, King Herod was rather fond of the prophet and decided instead to keep him around. In this depiction of John the Baptist, we see him staring with disdain at the cards that life has drawn him.
